Chapter 22
Mel waited until they were outside the Command Center, then she asked, "Do you want to discuss it over dinner?"
"What is there to discuss?"
She shrugged her shoulders. "How you feel about it? What you want to do about it? What you want people to know? What you don't want them to know?"
"I would like to have dinner with you."
She nodded. "Then why don't we go find out what condition my quarters are in, then Benjamin and I can have a shower, and I can put him to bed while you have a shower."
He nodded. "I would like that."
They were quiet until they arrived at her quarters. She was surprised to find the door locked. She unlocked it and looked around. "I guess Anna and Benjamin must not have been in here when they were taken, everything looks undisturbed. Come on in." She closed the door and bolted it.
She offered him Benjamin. "Can you hold him for a minute?"
He took the baby, feeling a little less awkward this time. She headed to the back room and gestured for him to follow. He did. She opened a footlocker and dug around. She pulled out a pair of pants and a long-sleeved shirt. "These were my brother's. He was a really big guy, not tall like you. He was overweight. He and my dad never got along, so he ate to cope with things, so these things should fit you. The pants and sleeves might be a little short, but around here we make do."
She got up and started undressing. She threw all of her clothes in the dirty clothes bin, then retrieved a towel and laid it on her bed. She took Benjamin, undressed him, cleaned him up, then wrapped him in the towel and handed him back. "Can you hold him for a minute while I wash off, then you can give him to me and I'll bathe him." He nodded. She went into the bathroom and turned on the shower.
He followed a little uncertainly. He was enjoying watching her walk around naked, even if her hair and neck were covered in blood. She had washed her face at some point in time, probably when she was in the cell, but it hadn't made a huge difference. He asked, "I thought you said people didn't like to be stared at when they were naked, but you're wandering around naked."
She laughed as she washed her hair. "Well, you've already watched me shower once before and seen me naked two other times, seems kind of silly to be all shy about it now." She started scrubbing her body.
"But you looked away when I was naked."
She shrugged her shoulders and began rinsing the soap off her body. "I don't know. I guess I was just trying to be nice. I mean, even though we have had sex, I haven't exactly seen you naked. I didn't want you to feel like I was staring at you." She opened the shower door and held out her hands.
